Nestled along the scenic Rogue River, Gold Hill is one of Southern Oregon's oldest communities, with a history deeply rooted in Native American heritage, the Oregon Gold Rush, and the development of the Pacific Northwest.

Long before European settlers arrived, the region was home to the Takelma people, who lived along the Rogue River for thousands of years. They relied on the river's abundant salmon, acorns, camas bulbs, and other natural resources, establishing thriving villages throughout the Rogue Valley. The history of modern Gold Hill began in the early 1850s when rich gold deposits were discovered along the Rogue River during the California Gold Rush. Prospectors quickly flooded into Southern Oregon, establishing mining camps and nearby towns such as Jacksonville. In 1860, an exceptionally rich quartz gold deposit was found in the hills above the Rogue River, giving Gold Hill its name and transforming it into one of the region's important mining communities. The arrival of the Oregon & California Railroad in the 1880s helped Gold Hill grow beyond mining. The railroad connected local farms, ranches, and mines to larger markets throughout Oregon and California. During the early 20th century, Gold Hill expanded with agriculture, lumber, hydroelectric power, and the opening of the Beaver Portland Cement Company in 1914, which became one of Southern Oregon's largest employers.
